Christmas in T. J's. Photo by Tom Curbo

I grew up in the West Derby Road area of Liverpool in the 60’s and 70’s. I attended Steers Street infants school, and Whitefield Road juniors. At Whitefield road, I can remember that our headmaster was called Mr. Cain, and he lived up to his name, that’s for sure. When I was about eight years old, I used to go down to the Grafton Rooms, and wait for the taxi’s to come along. If the taxi was filled with girls I would open the door and salute. They always found this to be very cute, and would dip into their purses to find a few coins for me. I used to make a good “few bob” doing that !!!

This is a photo of me with my sisters, taken at Father Christmas’s grotto, T. J. Hughes store in London Road, Liverpool, sometime in December 1960.

We always went to T. J’s to see father Christmas, and afterwards went to watch the special show that they put on every year called “The Dancing Waters” . I can remember it vividly. It was a sort of fountain display, set to music with beautiful coloured lights running through the waters. You had to watch it through the cigarette smoke in those days though !!

Tom Curbo.
