Blow The Wind
by Kelly Downey (nee Davies)

The first time I saw The Long Day Closes I was completely captivated AND catapulted back to my own time at Cannon Kennedy School. I loved my time there. It was such a beautiful, atmospheric building and yet you still had the impression that it had once been someone's home (a bit of a posh one, mind you).

I remember sitting in class, aged 9 or 10,  six to a table, listening to the BBCs music for schools programme and hearing Blow The Wind Southerly and then the class singing along to it. I don't know if its because Liverpool is a seafaring city and all Scousers have a yearing to be 'out there' (even if we can't swim), but that particular lesson and that particular song awoke something in me; something I didn't understand. I just went with the beauty of it all, my head full of images of great waves and tall ships. So, to see my own visions on screen and to once again experience that slightly melancholic yearing; to be transported back-that was very powerful. Here was someone, someone I don't even know, who shared almost the same memories as me. What a connection.
