Going over the water
by Margaret Ledgerton
As a child and into my late teens, going 'over the water, meant getting the Overhead Railway from Seaforth to the Pier Head on a Sunday, especially in the summer. Our family would then get the ferry over to Birkenhead and meet up with my Dad's family for a day out at Arrowe Park, Thursaston or Bidston Hill. The ride along the Overhead Railway, the Dockers' Umbrella, was an education in economic history, that is, in Liverpool's past and sadly its decline. We knew the name of every dock and the order they came in along the railway. The names of the shipping lines and particular ships too. My father and uncles worked on the docks and the journey would include personal anecdotes, jokes and recent news about what had been going on that week.
